In good conscience, and after listening to my constituents, I voted against the Continuing Resolution bill as it did nothing to defund Planned Parenthood and their abhorrent actions.
Rep. Joe Barton released the following statement after voting against H.R. 719, Continuing Resolution for FY2016, and for H. Con. Res. 79.
“The Continuing Resolution for 2016 will provide appropriations for general government funding through December 11, 2015. In good conscience, and after listening to my constituents, I voted against this bill as it did nothing to defund Planned Parenthood and their abhorrent actions. American’s hard earned tax dollars simply cannot be used to fund abortions, much less used by those who participate in the sale of baby body parts. This practice should not be allowed and I do not condone it.
“While the Continuing Resolution provides some across the board reduction to regular appropriations accounts, it does little to balance our budget and rein in government spending. We cannot continue to kick the can down the road each time these difficult issues have to be addressed. The House must at times compel the Senate and President to act and this is one of those times.
“Prior to voting against the Continuing Resolution, I voted for H. Con Res 79, which includes language that would defund Planned Parenthood. I urge the Senate to pass these instructions as well.
“I also fought for the unborn at the Energy and Commerce Committee today, which took up measures of reconciliation. These measures redirect federal funds from organizations that perform abortions, like Planned Parenthood, to community health centers for one year. If included in a budget bill, this would only require a 51 vote threshold in the Senate. I am committed to making sure the practices at Planned Parenthood are put to an end and will do everything in my power to make that happen.”
