Washington: Rep. Barton (R-Ennis) released the following statement on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s approval of H.R. 3053, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017.

“Today, we jump-started progress on the long-stalled Yucca Mountain Nuclear Repository. I commend my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for coming together and working in a bipartisan way to solve a national priority.

“Once this bill is signed into law, Yucca Mountain can move forward as our national nuclear waste storage depository while also allowing for a single temporary interim storage facility until it is complete. High-level nuclear waste needs a safe, secure home and should no longer be stranded across the nation. Thirty years ago, the federal government committed to a permanent repository for nuclear waste - it is time we make good on that promise.”

Rep. Barton has worked tirelessly for over two decades to move the ball forward on safe and secure high-level waste storage, both long-term and interim. Nuclear waste at present is stored on-site at nuclear power generators that are often near communities, which raises both security and safety concerns.
